Unlike most birds which use a voice box called syrinx to produce sound, parrots use something called esophageal speech – sort of like burping – to manipulate their vocal tract. Then by means of moving their tongues forward and backward and adjusting their beaks, they are able to shape the sound that comes out like humans do.
