Agreed, part of it is the over-focus on public image/branding and as for not rocking the boat…I kind of think it has more to do with the terror involved in being judged as “unprofessional”. A lot of these manipulative types tend to single out people at work because they KNOW those people have no choice but to play along or risk losing their jobs because of that whole “professionalism” business.

So many people these days rely on manipulation to get them through social interactions instead of just being themselves, i feel like it’s a product of the society we live in.

I agree.. I think it is exactly that. Learned behaviour of those around them too won’t help; they become enablers to the behaviour to continue because they don’t want to rock the boat.
