Guinness World Records has crowned Corduroy, an Oregon cat, as the oldest living cat in the world at 26 years and 13 days.

Corduroy was born on August 1, 1989. Ashley Reed Okura, the owner of the feline, said she was only seven when Corduroy first entered her life.

Considering the average lifespan of a domesticated cat which is typically 15 – the age of Corduroy, that is 26, is pretty impressive.

“The secret has been allowing him to be a cat – hunting and getting plenty of love,” Reed Okura said in a statement at Reuters.

Aside from cat’s inborn instinct of chasing mice, Corduroy has a penchant for eating cheddar cheese, according to Guinness World Records officials.

Corduroy previously held the record of the oldest living cat back in 2014, but he lost it when the owners of another cat – Tiffany Two, a San Diego cat – claimed their pet to be older. But when Tiffany Two died at the age of 27, the record for the world’s oldest living cat goes back to Corduroy.

“We are thrilled! I bought Corduroy a mouse to celebrate … it is wonderful to share him with the world,” said Ashley on her beloved pet’s record-breaking achievement.

The record for the oldest cat that has ever lived belongs to Crème Puff, an Austin cat, who was born on August 3, 1967 and died on August 6, 2005 – exactly 38 years and 3 days.

Crème Puff lived with her owner, Jake Perry, in Austin, Texas. He was also the owner of Granpa Rex Allen, the previous record holder who was claimed to have been born in Paris in 1964 and died 1998, aged 34 years and 2 months.
