When you sleep, your nervous system becomes inactive, eyes get closed, your postural muscles get loosened up and a periodic suspension of consciousness starts to kick in. But don’t forget, brain remains active even during sleep.
This suspension of consciousness and response to external stimuli is when the powers of the body are restored. However, this can be affected by the way you sleep at night. If you have a bad sleeping position, it can have a long-term effect on your physical health like pain in neck, back, joints and in rare cases, it could even lead to difficulty in maintaining a neutral spine position. Also what we dream depends on how we sleep.
Below is the infographic provided by American Infographic, showing the healthiest and best sleeping position and how our postures during sleep affect our health.

Hmm, this conflicts with conventional wisdom that says fetal is best. Sleeping with legs straight, I’ve always heard, strains the lower back.
