One of the essential parts of ear that play role in hearing is the group of nerve cells called spiral ganglion cells present in the inner ear. The function of these cells is to send a sound signal from ear to the brain.

Most of the hearing loss is attributed to the irreversible degeneration of these nerve cells. Adult spiral ganglion cells lack the ability to regenerate. However, a new evidence shows that hearing loss due to the above cause can be restored using the spiral ganglion stem cells in inner ear which are capable of self renewal, and can be grown and induced to differentiate into mature spiral ganglion cells as well as neurons and glial cells.
The discovery is a milestone as spiral ganglion stem cells make a promising source of replacement cells for therapies. These regenerative cells can rejuvenate neural structures of the inner ear, and hence restore hearing loss.

Awesome news! I’m especially grateful as I enjoy listening to music at what we may call… greater-than-minimum volume hahaa. Thanks again for the new science news, keep it up!!

Haha, what can I say to you; I enjoy loud music too. Maybe people like us have higher audible frequency range or something. Whatever the reason, we should be grateful to science that we probably won’t go deaf. 😀

There seems to be a lot of positive results with stem cells. I ask my eye doctors why can’t they fix scarred macula in my right eye and a hole in retina but says not much going on stem cells and eyes.

Let’s just hope they come up with a treatment for that too using stem cells; if it happens almost any form of blindness due to loss of cells would be cure. 🙂

Might become a reality. It’ll revolutionize treatment of some forms of deafness.
