Looks like our Earth is not just one of its kind as stargazers uphold to explore the universe and discover new planets. With this news about discovering exoplanets, the uncertainty about the end of the world seems to be pulling towards the edge of evanescence. In case, the Earth is about to end, we may even have an option to evacuate Earth completely and an alternate planet to live in.

Researchers at The University of Auckland lately proposed a technique known as gravitational microlensing for finding Earth-like planets and have anticipated 100 billion of them. This technique is currently used by Japan-New Zealand collaboration called Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics (MOA ) at New Zealand’s Mt John Observatory.

“This work will require a combination of data from microlensing and the NASA Kepler space telescope. The aim of the study is to measure the number of planets with masses like that of Earth orbiting stars at distances typically twice the Sun-Earth distance. At that distance, the planets would be cooler than Earth. By combining the Kepler and the MOA results, Yock and his team will get a good estimate of the number of Earth-like and habitable planets in the Milky Way. The number of such planets is expected to be 100 billion.” said Dr Phil Yock, lead author, the University of Auckland’s Department of Physics.
